†1. Davy's proposed name for chloride of lead, horn-lead. Obs.
1812Sir H. Davy Chem. Philos. 397 One combination only of lead with chlorine is known..called horn lead by the old chemists... The name proposed for it is plumbane.

a. Any of the alkyl compounds of lead or the hypothetical series of saturated lead hydrides (analogous to the alkanes) from which they are formally derived; freq. as a formative element in names of such compounds.
b. spec. Lead tetrahydride, PbH4, an extremely unstable gas.
1920Chem. Abstr. XIV. 2182 The mol. wt. indicates that it has the double formula [(C8H9)3Pb]2 so that it might be considered as hexa-p-xylyldiplumbane. 1950N. V. Sidgwick Chem. Elements & Compounds I. 554 Lead hydride, plumbane, presumably PbH4..was prepared by Paneth in 1920. Ibid. 596 The diplumbane formed may change further into lead tetra-aryl and metallic lead. 1964A. Rochow Organometallic Chem. i. 4 The system [of nomenclature] is so useful that it has been extended..even to tin and lead (..(C6H5)2PbCl2, diphenyldichloroplumbane), although the older inorganic names like diphenyllead dichloride still persist to a considerable extent. 1967P.
