pluˌtonometaˈmorphism Petrol. [f. Plutonism + -o + metamorphism.] Metamorphism that occurs at high temperatures and high pressures at great depths under the earth.
1889A. Harker in Geol. Mag. Decade III. VI. 17 We may accordingly use the term plutono-metamorphism to describe the profound changes in rocks implied in the joint influence of very elevated temperature and enormous pressure. 1950F. H. Hatch et al. Petrol. Ign. Rocks (ed. 10) vii. 336 The chief problem of the eclogites concerns their origin. They are believed to be products of ‘plutono⁓metamorphism’—to lie on the borderland between the igneous and metamorphic. |
