Applied to compounds in which two or more hydrogen atoms have been replaced by chlorine atoms; esp. in polychlorinated biphenyl [biphenyl = diphenyl], any of a class of such compounds derived from biphenyl, (C6H5)2, or its derivatives, which have a wide variety of industrial applications and are persistent environmental pollutants; abbrev.
