[App. derived from Pg. pampo, F. pample, said to be applied to the same fish. A dim. *pamplet may have become pamphlet, pomphlet, and pomfret.]
A fish of the genus Stomateoides, inhabiting the Indian and Pacific Oceans, much esteemed for food, particularly the two species S. niger, the black pomfret, and S. sinensis, the white pomfret, which when young is known as silver pomfret, and when old is the grey pomfret.
