argel Med.|ˈɑːdʒəl| [ad. Arab. ḥarjil (Sharaf Dict. Med.).] The leaves of the African asclepiadaceous plant Solenostemma argel, formerly used to adulterate senna; also, the plant itself.
1803Phil. Mag. XV. 58 The plant arguel, called senna of Mecca, placed in the class of the cynanchum by C. Nectoux, who has given an ample description of it. 1818A. T. Thomson Lond. Disp. (ed. 2) 93 The leaf of argel is an inch or 14 lines long, while that of senna never exceeds nine lines. 1874Garrod & Baxter Mat.
