[ad. F. argentaffine (P. Masson 1914, in Compt. Rend. CLVIII. 60), f. L. argent-um silver + affīn-is akin, after chromaffine chromaffin a.]
Pertaining to or possessing the property of being readily stained black by ammoniacal silver in the absence of a reducing agent; chiefly spec. designating numerous isolated endocrine cells in the gastro-intestinal epithelium which contain cytoplasmic granules with this property.
1925Bull. Johns Hopkins Hosp. XXXVII. 135/1 ‘Argentaffine’ or silver-staining granules are always demonstrable in these cells.Ibid., The argentaffine cells may proliferate.1926Jrnl. Path. & Bacteriol. XXIX. 137 The specialised argentaffin cells of the crypts of Lieberkühn.1947Dawson & Moyer in Anat. Rec. XCVII. 328 These cells are demonstrable by the Bodian protargol method (even without reduction or gold toning)..but are not chromaffin positive and are not impregnated by the Masson-Hamperl technique. Accordingly they are referred to as argentophile rather than argentaffin.1948Ibid. C. 324 Maturation of the argentaffin granules.1964Jrnl. Anat. XCVIII. 499 The number of argentaffin cells..and of argentaffin granules in a particular cell, can be expected to vary depending on the functional state of the cells.1965Lee & Knowles Animal Hormones ix. 125 Tumours of the argentaffin tissue in man occur and large quantities of 5-HT are released leading to high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs.1969Anat. Anzeiger CXXV. 18 In type ‘c’ some of the granules in the cell are argyrophile as well as argentaffin.1976Path. Ann. XI. 201 The evolution of our concepts regarding the neoplasms arising from the family of endocrine (or neuroendocrine) cells, variously called Kultschitzky's, enterochromaffin, argentaffin, argyrophil, and basal cells, is a good example of the way ideas in pathology slowly germinate over decades.
Hence ˌargentaˈffinity, the property of being argentaffin; ˌargentaffiˈnoma [-oma], a tumour (occurring chiefly in the appendix) whose tissue stains like argentaffin cells, from which it is thought to develop.
1934O. T. Bailey in Arch. Path. XVIII. 843 Because of the presence of the specific silver granules in the cytoplasm of these neoplastic cells, the term ‘argentaffinoma’ seems more descriptive than ‘carcinoid’.1961Webster, Argentaffinity.1961R. D. Baker Essent. Path. xvi. 401 The tumor cells are argyrophylic [sic], with silver-staining granules in the cytoplasm, and are called argentaffinomas.1969Anat. Anzeiger CXXV. 18 The property of argentaffinity or of argyrophilia rests not in these cells as such but in the individual granules that lie in their cytoplasm.1976Edington & Gilles Path. in Tropics (ed. 2) 541 The tumours called ‘carcinoids’ or argentaffinomas arise from these cells.1982Amer. Jrnl. Surg. Path. VI. 131/1 Rectal carcinoids and normal rectal mucosa were compared for the presence of argentaffinity and argyrophilia.1984J.R. Tighe Pathology (ed. 4) xvi. 149 Neoplasms of the small intestine are rare and include argentaffinoma.
