OF. poinson, ponson, ponchon, F. poinçon, It. ponzone, punzone, puncheon n.1 The Chaucer MSS. are divided between pounson and pounse. The precise sense in the quot. is not recorded for OF. or It., and does not occur in puncheon n.1, but is found from 16th c. in pounce v.1 and n.1] trans. To stamp holes in (clothing) for the purpose of adornment; to pink. Hence ˈpounsoned ppl. a., ˈpounsoning vbl. n.
