Arkie, n. and a. U.S. colloq. (freq. derogatory). Brit. |ˈɑːki|, U.S. |ˈɑrki| Forms: 19– Arkie, 19– Arky [‹ Ark- (in the name of Arkansas: see Arkansas n.) + -y suffix6. Compare earlier Okie n.1] and adj. A native or inhabitant of Arkansas, an Arkansan; spec. one made homeless during the Great Depression and forced to seek employment elsewhere, esp. in California (cf. Okie n.1). Hence: a simpleton, a country bumpkin (depreciative). Also attrib. or as adj.
