1879Grove Dict. Mus. I. 89/1 Arpeggione, or Guitar Violoncello, a stringed instrument, played with a bow, which was invented by G. Staufer, of Vienna, in 1823. 1959Chambers's Encycl. XIV. 328/1 The arpeggione, now completely forgotten, derives some importance from the fact that no less a composer than Franz Schubert wrote a sonata for arpeggione and pianoforte. |
