1. Of fire: Forced or driven back by some contrivance upon the substance which is subjected to its operation.
1605Timme Quersit. iii. 174 Thou shalt calcine at a reuerberatorie fire the feces which thou reseruedst before. 1651French Distill. v. 168 Iron must be made into a Crocus in a reverberatory fire. 1727–38Chambers Cycl. s.v.
