2. a. A form of salmon-net (see quot. 1830).
1505Berwick Reg. in Hist. MSS. Comm., Varr. Collect. I. 12 That no mane exsept he be a fre burges..shall not fish upone Twede for no salmond with longe net, short net, nor reynge net. 1830Weddell in Archæol. æliana (1855) IV. 302 Our present modes of fishing..are by stell nets, wear-shot, and ring or bob nets. Ibid. 303 The ring or bob-net is a long net without any bosom (which the other nets have).
b. A form of long seine-net which is supported at the ends by separate boats, one of which moves in a circular path towards the other in order to trap the fish within the net, used esp. in the Scottish fishing grounds to catch herring.

As a description, ‘ring-netting’ is probably the most accurate term. In this new form of fishing..two boats operated together, holding the different ends of a net some 150 yards in length; the net was cast as one boat moved from a starting-point near its partner, to form a wide circle as it returned to the original point, and the haul was completed by gradually constricting the circle till the fish were in a concentrated mass ready to be hauled aboard.
