Betamax, n.|ˈbiːtəmæks| [f. Jap. beta(-beta all over + -max, abbrev. of maximum n., after the condensed format in which the signal is recorded. The formation was app. influenced by beta n. (Jap. beta).] A proprietary name for the videocassette format also known as Beta (*beta n. 4).
