1. A strip of card, leather, ribbon, or other material, inserted between the pages of a book to mark a place; esp. an item made specifically for this purpose, often with a decorative design. Also fig. and in extended use.

3. Computing. Originally: a sequence of characters inserted into an electronic document to enable the user to return to the flagged location (e.g. for editing purposes). Later also: a record of the address of a file, Internet page, or other data used to enable quick access by a user.
