scala Anat.|ˈskeɪlə| [L., = ‘ladder’.] Each of two passages (the scala tympani below and the scala vestibuli above) into which the spiral tube of the cochlea is divided by a bony spiral lamina and which communicate at the apex of the spiral; also, the scala media or central duct of the cochlea, situated between these two passages and shut off from them by two membranes.
