buckthorn|ˈbʌkθɔːn| [f. buck n.1 + thorn. App. Lyte's translation of the It. and mod.L. names.] The shrub Rhamnus catharticus; the berries of which yield sap-green and other pigments, and were formerly used as a powerful cathartic.
