I. 25 A considerable part of tread wear may be caused by the slipping of portions of the tread over the road surface in changing from the normal to the deflected condition and vice versa. This might be termed a scuffing action. 1955W. H. 3. Engin. The roughening of a metal surface designed to rub against another when the lubrication is inadequate to prevent local fusion and tearing of the two surfaces.

With the reciprocating movement of the parts, a shearing action takes place,..causing disruption of the surfaces.
