Secchi('s) disc: a type of opaque white disc which is used in determining the transparency of water; the disc, maintained in a horizontal attitude, is allowed to sink and the depth at which it ceases to be visible from the surface is recorded.
Secchi and Cialdi first described the use of discs of this kind in 1865 (Compt. Rend. LXI. 101).
