‖ caput succedaneum, n. Obstetr.|ˈkæpʊt sʌksɪˈdeɪnɪəm| [mod.L., = substitute head, f. L. caput n. + succēdāneum, neut. sing. of succēdāneus substitute.] A temporary oedematous swelling on the presenting part (usu. the head) of a baby during birth.
