The outer covering of the cystocarp, found in algæ of the family Rhodomelaceæ.
1849W. H. Harvey Man. Brit. Marine Algæ (ed. 2) 69 In the ceramidium the conceptacular fruit is brought to its highest development. This organ is ovate or urn-shaped, furnished with an apical pore, and containing a tuft of pear-shaped spores, rising from the base of the cavity. 1902Encycl. Brit. XXV. 270/1 In Rhodomelaceæ there is a special urn-shaped envelope surrounding the sporogenous filaments. This is a ceramidium. |
