quarkonium, n. Particle Physics.|kwɑːˈkəʊnɪəm| Pl. -ia. [f. quark n.2 + -onium 2.] A meson consisting of a quark bound to the corresponding antiquark; matter, or a system, consisting of such a particle or particles.
1977Quigg & Rosner in Physics Lett. B. LXXI. 153/1 In this note we describe some features of the logarithmic potential as applied to quarkonium families. 1979Nature 12 July 107/3 They [sc. gluons] do play a pivotal part in the decay of heavy quark–antiquark bound states (‘quarkonia’) produced by electron-positron annihilation at high energies. 1982Sci. Amer. May 42/1 Quarkonium is closely analogous in structure to positronium. In quarkonium the bound quark and the antiquark are..identical in size and mass, and the allowed modes of motion in quarkonium are similar to those in positronium. 1986B. G. Duff Fund. Particles iv. 49 Again, in direct analogy, the bb system has also been studied and a number of states observed..which are referred to as ‘beautyonium’. In general, such qq systems are called ‘quarkonia’. |
