Shigella Bacteriol.|ʃɪˈgɛlə| Also shigella. Pl. -ellæ, -ellas. [mod.L., f. Shiga + L. -ella (see -el2).] 1. A member of the genus of Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria so called, which includes some causing dysentery in man and other animals.
