†1. Naut. (See quot.) Obs.
1769Falconer Dict. Marine (1780) s.v. Garland, Shot-Garland,..a piece of timber nailed horizontally along the ship's side from one gun-port to another, and used to contain the round-shot ready for charging the great guns in battle. For this purpose it is furnished with several semi⁓globular cavities, corresponding to the size of the cannon⁓balls which it is employed to contain.
2. ‘In land-batteries, an iron or wooden stand on which shot and shell are piled in order to preserve them from deterioration’ (Cent. Dict. 1891). |
