Shotokan, n.|ʃəʊˈtəʊkæn| Also Shoto-kan. [Jap., f. shō- right, true + to way + kan mansion.] One of the five main styles of karate. Usu. attrib. Founded by Funakoshi Gichin (1870–1957), the originator of karate, and now the most widely practised style in the U.K. and a number of other countries.
