a. The preliminary operation in graining of moistening the wood with beer and rubbing it over with whiting in order that the colour may adhere.

Davidson House-Painting 106 In order that the graining colours which are mixed with beer may adhere to the ground which has been painted in oil, it is necessary that the surface should be prepared. This is done by passing over it with a sponge moistened with beer and rubbed with whiting; when this is dry, the distemper colour will work freely over the oil, and will adhere to it. This process is called cissing.1877C. H.
