sinistrorse, a.|ˈsɪnɪstrɔːs|
[ad. L. sinistrorsus, contracted f. *sinistrōvorsus, f. sinister left + vertĕre to turn.]
1. Bot. Twining or turning spirally from right to left.
The word has been used in two opposite senses, owing to a difference in the supposed position of the observer: see quot. 1870 and cf. note on dextrorse.
1856Henslow Dict. Bot. Terms 174 Sinistrorse,..towards the left hand. 1870Henfrey's Bot. (ed. 2) 100 In determining the direction of spirals,..it is usual to suppose one's self standing in the axis of the organ; but many authors suppose themselves standing in front of it;..hence great confusion in the application of the terms dextrorse and sinistrorse. 1879A. Gray Struct. Bot. (ed. 6) iv. §3. 140 Direction of Overlapping..may be either to the right (dextrorse) or to the left (sinistrorse).
