quiteron, n. Electronics.|ˈkwɪtərɒn| [f. initial letters of quasiparticle injection tunnelling effect (the phenomenon on which the device depends for its operation) + -tron.] A superconducting device with switching and amplifying characteristics similar to those of a transistor, but capable of operating at lower power levels.
1982U.S. Patent 4,334,158 8 June, The operation of the present device is based on QUasi-particle Injection Tunneling, and hence is called the Quiteron. It relies on heavy injection of excess quasi-particles in order to cause a superconducting gap to drastically change, and generally to vanish. 1983New Scientist 10 Feb. 369/3 The quiteron is not the first superconducting device that engineers have considered for chips. 1983Your Computer (Austral.) Apr. 18/3 The patented device is called the quiteron by its IBM inventor, Sadeq M Faris. 1987Appl. Physics Lett. L. 295/2 The gain of the quiteron depends upon gap suppression of the central film and is strongly dependent upon injection level. |
