smother crop [f. smother v.] A crop which is grown to suppress weeds.
1920W. E. Brenchley Weeds on Farm Land iii. 51 When a smother crop is grown it is of course necessary that the crop seed should be free from weed seed. 1937A. F. Hill Econ. Bot. xv. 336 Barley is also used for hay and pasturage and as a smother crop to kill out weeds. 1973P. A. Colinvaux Introd. Ecol. xxi. 303 Barley is known as a ‘smother crop’ because it keeps down weeds in the field. This it does with root secretions, weed killers of its own. |
