‖ Spielraum Philos.|ˈʃpiːlraʊm| Pl. Spielräume. [Ger. (J. von Kries Die Principien der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung, 1886), f. spiel play + raum room.] The range of possibilities (orig. in probability theory) within which the probability of an outcome or likelihood of a hypothesis is to be assessed.
1921J. M. Keynes Treat. Probability vii. 88 Briefly..he [sc. von Kries] may be said to hold that the hypotheses for the probabilities of which we wish to obtain a numerical comparison, must refer to ‘fields’ (Spielräume). 1937Mind XLVI. 486 In this connexion he criticises von Kries's ‘Spielraum’-theory of probability. 1944Horizon IX. 235, I propose to borrow from a theory of probability the concept of a spielraum. In connection with the judgments we make about freedom, this metaphor of a playing⁓space can be applied in three ways. 1961J. N. Findlay Values & Intentions iii. 111 The image of a Spielraum or space of possibilities seems..indispensable to the full development of partial belief. 1969P. Geach God & Soul vii. 97 There has to be this element of chance in things if human choices are to have any Spielraum. |
