spinar Astr.|ˈspɪnɑː(r)| [f. spin(ning st)ar, after quasar, pulsar.] A hypothetical, supermassive, rapidly rotating celestial object which may be located in the nuclei of some active galaxies and quasars, and which could help to account for the huge energy output of quasars.
1971Morrison & Cavaliere in D. J. K. O'Connell Nuclei of Galaxies 487 By spinars we mean a class of bodies storing a considerable fraction of their total energy in a single, continuous degree of freedom—rotation... Pulsars are a very special subclass of spinars. 1977Astron. & Astrophysics LVI. 166/2 We will consider..a supermassive oblique rotator (SOR) having solid-body rotation and quasi-dipole magnetic field. In the ‘cold’ version such a rotator coincides with a ‘spinar’ or a ‘giant pulsar’ proposed by Morrison. 1978Nature 28 Sept. 282/1 The nonthermal radiation of a spinar can in some circumstances far exceed the thermal (Eddington-limited) component. |
