‖ spinnbarkeit|ˈʃpɪnbɑːkaɪt| Also Spinnbarkeit. [a. G. spinnbarkeit (H. Erbring 1936, in Kolloid-Beihefte XLIV. 173), f. spinnbar (see prec.).] The capacity of a viscous liquid, esp. the cervical mucus, for being drawn into strands; spinnability.
[1938G. W. S. Blair Introd. Industr. Rheol. x. 108 Erbring, studying this property in detail, calls it ‘Spinnbarkeit’, which perhaps is best translated as ‘fibrosity’.] 1944― Survey Gen. & Appl. Rheol. v. 69 Both tack and ‘Spinnbarkeit’ are often associated with adhesive properties. 1954G. I. M. Swyer Reproduction & Sex iv. 47 During the two or three days immediately prior to ovulation, the healthy cervix pours forth a copious flow of clear, almost watery mucus which flows out over the vaginal surface of the cervix... At this time it possesses in marked degree the rheological property variously called ‘spinnbarkeit’, ‘fibrosity’ or, perhaps better, ‘ductility’, that is, the ability to be drawn out into a fine thread (or to be blown up into a sizeable bubble). 1975Acta Endocrinologia Suppl. CXCIX. 242 The amount, spinnbarkeit and ferning of the cervical mucus correlated well with the estradiol concentration. |
