ˈcross-ˈcouple, v. [cross- 6.] trans. To couple things that do not naturally go together. Hence † ˈcross-ˈcouple n., ˈcross-ˈcoupling vbl. n., Puttenham's term for the rhetorical figure synœciosis, ‘whereby heterogeneous things were combined or attributed to one person’.
