1. The action of digging or removing with a spud; spec. the preliminary drilling of a well-hole through the upper part of the overburden (see spud v. 3 a); freq. as spudding in, spudding-in.
1885Engineering 26 June 708/2 The bore is usually started by what is termed spudding—i.e., working the tools direct from the Bull wheel, lifting and dropping by slacking or surging the rope on the wheel. 1891Daily News 12 Sept. 3/6 This is followed by regular day work..made up of thistle spudding,..hop-branching, hay⁓making, harvesting, &c. 1901Munsey's Mag.
