cytomegalovirus, n. Med.|saɪtəʊˈmɛgələʊvaɪərəs| [f. cytomegalic adj. s.v. *cyto- + -o1 + virus n.] Any of a group of herpesviruses which produce enlargement of infected cells and distinctive nuclear inclusion bodies, typically producing few or very mild symptoms but freq. leading to severe neurological symptoms in immunocompromised individuals and the new-born.
