Ramapithecus|ˌrɑːməˈpɪθiːkəs| [mod.L. (G. E. Lewis 1934, in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. CCXXVII. 162), f. Rāma, the name of an Indian prince of Ayodhyā + Gr. πίθηκος ape.] A fossil anthropoid ape, sometimes considered a hominid, belonging to the genus so called and known from remains found in northern India and East Africa. So ramaˈpithecine n. and a., a fossil anthropoid closely related to Ramapithecus; pertaining to or resembling an anthropoid ape of this kind.
