Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Carpocratianus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Carpocratianus (5th cent. in Augustine) < the name of Carpocrates (Hellenistic Greek Καρποκράτης ) of Alexandria (2nd cent. a.d.) + classical Latin -iānus -ian suffix.Compare Middle French, French Carpocratien (1579 or earlier). Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: Carpoˈcratian.
A follower of Carpocrates of Alexandria ( a.d. 120), who asserted the mortality of Christ's body and the creation of the world by angels.
