Etymology: Probably < Middle French carrelé, type of fabric (16th cent.), probably a specific use of carrelé checked < carrel , carreau square (see carlet n.2). Compare early modern Dutch carlet (1587).
Obsolete.
A fabric mentioned in the 16th and 17th centuries.
