Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Aramaic. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Also partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Aramaic 'aggāḏāh; Hebrew haggāḏāh; Latin aggada.
Etymology: < (i) Aramaic 'aggāḏāh (in both senses of the English word), and its etymon (ii) post-biblical Hebrew haggāḏāh Haggadah n. In early use partly via post-classical Latin aggada (1552 or earlier; also aggadah (1556 or earlier), agada (1596 or earlier)).In plural form aggadot after the Hebrew plural form haggāḏōṯ. The plural form aggados in quot. 1657 at sense 1 reflects an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew plural form haggāḏōṯ , which Buxtorf cites in Hebrew script. The usual sense of the word is now sense 1, both in modern Hebrew and in English. In sense 2, Haggadah n. is more common.

1. The non-legal element of Jewish rabbinical literature, esp. the Talmud and Midrash, comprising legends, parables, anecdotes, etc., as distinct from Halacha (Halacha n.); (also) a legend, parable, anecdote, etc., of this type. Cf. Haggadah n. 1.
