Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is usually maintained on the third syllable, e.g. duplicato-dentate Brit. /djuːplᵻˌkeɪtəʊˈdɛnteɪt/, /dʒuːplᵻˌkeɪtəʊˈdɛnteɪt/, U.S. /ˌd(j)upləˈˌkeɪdoʊˈdɛnˌteɪt/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin duplicato-.
Etymology: < scientific Latin duplicato-, combining form (in e.g. duplicato-dentatus duplicato-dentate) of classical Latin duplicātus duplicate adj.; compare -o- connective.With duplicato-dentate compare scientific Latin duplicato-dentatus (1757 or earlier). With duplicato-pinnate compare scientific Latin duplicato-pinnatus (1737 or earlier). With duplicato-serrate compare scientific Latin duplicato-serratus (1737 or earlier). With duplicato-ternate compare scientific Latin duplicato-ternatus (1747 or earlier).
combining form of Latin duplicātus doubled, prefixed to adjectives in the sense ‘doubly’; esp. in Botany, as duplicato-dentate, duplicato-pinnate, duplicato-serrate, duplicato-ternate, applied to toothed, pinnate, etc. leaves, of which the teeth, pinnæ, etc. are themselves again dentate, pinnate, and so on.
