Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cat n.¹, mint n.²

Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < the genitive of cat n.¹ + mint n.²; and partly (in β. forms) < cat n.¹ + mint n.²The name reflects the fact that the scent of plants in this genus is renowned for being attractive to cats (compare catnip n. and see quot. 1774).
