Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adustivus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin adustivus that adusts (a1350 in a British source; 1363 in Chauliac) < classical Latin adūst- , past participial stem of adūrere adure v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Old Occitan adustiu (14th cent. in an isolated attestation), Middle French adustif (1549), Spanish adustivo (a1450), Italian adustivo (end of the 14th cent.), all in sense ‘burning, scorching’.
Now rare.
That adusts (adust v.2) or has been adusted; characterized by adustion; burning, scorching. Also figurative.In quot. 1921 probably from dictionary record.
