Any of several filamentous cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) of (or formerly of) the genus Spirulina, which grow in dense tangled masses in warm alkaline lakes in Africa and Central and South America; (in later use) esp. (as a mass noun) such algae dried and prepared in various ways as a food, food additive, or dietary supplement. Also (in form Spirulina): the genus itself.The species used for commercial production of spirulina are now considered to be members of a separate genus, Arthrospira, with A. platensis and A. maxima the most commonly cultivated.
