Etymology: < Champagne Charley, the nickname of London wine merchant Charles Wright ( < champagne n. + Charley , pet form of the male forename Charles : see Charlie n.), popularized by the music hall song Champagne Charley (by G. Leybourne and A. Lee, 1864).Wright was active in the 1820s and associated with the West End theatres. Compare the following earlier references to the nickname:1826 London Mag. Jan. 46 Wright—the Champagne Charley.1847 Satirist 10 Jan. 12/1 We do not know whether the celebrated ‘Champagne Charley’, some time since so well known for his Bacchic orgies round the theatres, was the son of Colonel Wright.The style of hat (see sense 1) was apparently associated either with Charles Wright himself or with the music hall song; a man wearing such a hat is depicted on the cover of an early edition of the sheet music for the song.
