Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French avantageux.
Etymology: < Middle French avantageux, avantaigeux, advantageux, adventaigeux (French avantageux ) profitable, beneficial, favourable (1418) < avantage advantage n. + -eux -ous suffix. Compare Spanish avantajoso (a1440), Italian †avvantaggioso (14th cent. with negative connotation ‘taking advantage, fraudulent’, 1598 (in Florio) ‘beneficial, favourable’; now superseded by vantaggioso , which shows loss of the unstressed initial vowel (a1575; compare vantageous adj.)).With the negatively connotated sense 2 compare senses with a similar connotation in French, e.g. ‘fraudulent, unfair’ (attested sporadically in Middle French from 1449 to 1480), ‘haughty, presumptuous’ (1564), and Cotgrave's (1611) contextual gloss ‘very forward’ for the French lemma in his dictionary. With the spelling in -ious compare e.g. outrageous adj.; compare the reverse phenomenon seen in spellings in-eous of contagious adj.
