Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin advenīre.
Etymology: < classical Latin advenīre to come (to), arrive (at), reach < ad- ad- prefix + venīre to come (see Venite n.). Compare Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French avenir , (now chiefly) advenir (first half of the 10th cent. as avenir , first half of the 13th cent. with remodelling after the Latin etymon) to happen (first half of the 10th cent.), to be suitable or fitting (late 10th cent.), to succeed (late 10th cent.), to arrive, to come (12th cent.). Compare intervene v.
1. intransitive. To arrive, to come (to), esp. at a significant juncture; (esp. of something immaterial) to become a feature of or bear upon a situation, matter, etc., without being essential to it; to be added incidentally or as an adjunct.
