Origin: A borrowing from Korean. Etymon: Korean chaebol.
Etymology: < Korean chaebol < chae wealth + bol faction, clique, after Japanese zaibatsu zaibatsu n.
In South Korea: a large business conglomerate, usually owned and controlled by one family. Also: a family which runs such an enterprise; a member of such a family. Also in extended use: the privileged social status and wealthy, fashionable lifestyle associated with such businesses and families. Cf. zaibatsu n., keiretsu n. Frequently attributive.Unlike family-owned corporations in Japan (the zaibatsu and keiretsu), chaebol were initially (and until the late 1980s) dependent on state financial support, and were consequently subject to government policy and regulation.
