Etymology: < Japanese chanoyu hot water boiled for the purpose of making tea, especially ceremonially (probably 14th cent.), method of making tea, gathering for tea drinking (15th cent.; 1603 in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam), apparently < cha tea (see matcha n.) + no, possessive particle + yu hot water; in use with reference to the gathering perhaps by association or confusion with cha no e tea meeting, tea ceremony (probably 14th cent.; < cha + no + e meeting).The form tsianoi was originally transmitted via German and may ultimately reflect a regional pronunciation of the final element in Japanese.

In Japanese culture: the ceremonial preparation and drinking of the powdered green tea matcha (matcha n.); a gathering devoted to this. Frequently attributive.
