Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French chinoiserie.
Etymology: < French chinoiserie piece of decorative art using Chinese designs, Western art style using such designs (both 1833 or earlier), behaviour characteristic of China (1854 in the passage translated in quot. 1855 at Chinesery n. 1), peculiar or exaggerated formalities (1873) < chinois chinois n. + -erie -ery suffix. With sense A. 1 compare German Chinoiserie (1832 or earlier).
