Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French chiaous; Italian chiaus, chiausso.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French chiaous, chaous, chaoux, French chiaoux (1542 or earlier; now usually in form chaouch : see below), and its etymon (ii) Italian chiaus, chiausso, ciausco, ciauscio (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1548 or earlier; now historical, usually in the form ciausso) < Ottoman Turkish çavuş herald, messenger, sergeant, doorkeeper (14th cent. in Old Anatolian Turkish; Turkish çavuş , (regional) çavış , çawuş sergeant), cognate with Old Turkic (runiform) çabış army commander (8th cent.), Chaghatai çawuş mace-bearer, doorkeeper, caravan guide (15th cent.). Compare chouse n., choush n., tchaush n.The β. forms show alteration directly after Turkish. Compare French tchaouch , tchiaouch , tchaouche (1654 or earlier in this form type), chaouch , chaouche (1729 or earlier in this form type), and compare also tchaush n. Forms without the medial consonant in various European languages ultimately reflect the historically common Turkish variant pronunciation with the bilabial consonant (compare Turkish regional çawuş) which was not always distinguished by foreign language speakers from the following back vowel.
A Turkish messenger, sergeant, or lictor.
