Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French advoquer.
Etymology: < Middle French advoquer to summon (a legal action) to a court (a1392; compare Old French avochier , in the same sense (1266)), to summon, call upon (a1440 as avocquier ) < classical Latin advocāre advocate v. Compare earlier revoke v., provoke v., etc. Compare also earlier avouch v., avow v.1, and advocate v.
1. transitive. Law. To summon (a legal action) from a lower court to a higher court, esp. the papal Court of Rome. Cf. advocate v. 1, advocation n. 4. Now historical.Chiefly with reference to the legal matter of Henry VIII's divorce from Catherine of Aragon.
