Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Latin advolution- , advolutio ; ad- prefix, evolution n.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin advolution-, advolutio action of rolling towards (1545 or earlier), prostration (1549 or earlier), rotation (1557 or earlier) < classical Latin advolūt- , past participial stem of advolvere to roll to or towards, (reflexive or passive) to prostrate oneself before, grovel at ( < ad- ad- prefix + volvere volve v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. In sense 2 perhaps formed independently, < ad- prefix + -volution (in evolution n.): compare quot. 1885. Compare earlier volution n.
